Match of the Day - Short History: the programme first aired in the summer of 1964, showing highlights of Liverpool v Arsenal. The total television audience for this first match amounted to just 20,000 viewers - about half the number of spectators in the stadium. The show grew in popularity and, following England's World Cup triumph, moved to a peak-time viewing slot on Saturday nights. Trial by television was born as the invention of the video-disc, which allowed slow motion replays to be shown for the first time, and proved straight away that a West Bromwich Albion goal against league leaders Leeds was offside. John Motson joined the show in 1972, followed by Jimmy Hill in 1973, who teamed up with Bob Wilson, the former Arsenal goalkeeper. Other well known former presenters included Des Lynam.
