Our Science Musem virtually-indestructible
R/C (radio-controlled) plane Mark 2
is one of our favourite new products. In the olden days,
radio-controlled aeroplanes were expensive, noisy and very
fragile, and if you wanted to own one, you usually had to
spend months making it yourself. Advances in propulsion
technologies - most notably lighter batteries - enabled
radio-controlled planes to be driven by electric motors,
rather than unpredictable and noisy miniature petrol motors.
Now, modern materials are making radio-controlled planes
even more appealing. Our virtually-unbreakable radio-controlled
plane uses shape-memory plastic in the fuselage and
wings - this new material is called "shape memory" because
if you bend it (or even try to fold it!), it always returns
to its original shape - perfect for a radio-controlled plane!
Hence our title: "crash, bang, wallop and it still flies".
There are a number of poor quality RC planes on the market
that we have reviewed, but this one really works well!
What's more, are now selling the new
Mark 2 version which is even stronger, faster
and comes with a special hand-control unit. Special sensors
mean you use this handset like a real aeroplane joystick
- tilt it to the left, and the plane will turn to the left
- far more intuitive than traditional controllers that have
separate levers for left/right and up/down.

Comments - When we first got our sample we were we
a little skeptical of the Aero Jex's performance. After
all there are so many "unworthy" RC planes on the market.
After just a few moments charging we were amazed at how
easily it launched into the air and had a stable flight
path. We were able to dodge it between buildings before
we finally crashed it. It is very robust and can withstand
numerous hard core crashes. Able to launch from the runway
or by hand, it will glide through the air with a swift precision
and manoeuverability and will last up to 10 mins of great
quality aviation time before recharging via the remote control
which takes about 5 mins for full charge. Designed from
the latest complex compound material that offers flexibility,
strength and light weight, it was able to withstand some
serious smashes.
